Starting Late Doesn’t Mean Finishing Behind – Lynn’s Story

There is a moment in almost every initial conversation I have with a client where the tone shifts. Up until that point, we’re talking about numbers, accounts, and general goals. And then something more personal comes out.

“I feel like I’m behind.”

Lynn said those exact words when we first met.

She had not saved consistently in her earlier years. Life had taken different turns, priorities had shifted, and retirement planning had not always been at the top of the list. By the time she sat down with me, she believed she had missed her window to create the kind of retirement she wanted.

What stood out to me was not where she was starting. It was her willingness to take control of what came next. That is the turning point for so many people.

Instead of spending our time focused on what she didn’t do, we focused on what was still possible. And there was more opportunity there than she initially realized.

One of the first things we looked at was her ability to take advantage of catch-up contributions. These are often overlooked, but they can be incredibly powerful in the later working years. Once Lynn understood how much she could still set aside and how those contributions could impact her timeline, she leaned into it. She made it a priority.

At the same time, we looked at her spending. Not with the goal of cutting everything back, but to understand where her money was going and whether it aligned with what she wanted for her future. Her budget became less about restriction and more about intention.

That shift made it easier for her to stay consistent. She wasn’t just saving because she thought she should. She was saving because she could see what it was creating for her.

Over time, those decisions began to build on each other. Her savings increased. Her confidence grew. And the idea that she was “behind” started to fade. In its place was a sense of momentum. That momentum changed her timeline.

Lynn is now retiring one year earlier than she originally expected. And she is not stepping into retirement cautiously. She is stepping into it with excitement and a plan for how she wants to spend her time.

One of the first things she has planned is a hiking trip to Yosemite National Park, something she had always talked about but wasn’t sure would actually become a reality.

What I love about her story is that it is not about perfection. It’s not about starting early or doing everything right from the beginning. It’s about making a decision to move forward.

So many women delay planning because they feel like they should have done more. And that delay becomes the very thing that holds them back. Lynn did the opposite. She started where she was and made the most of what was in front of her.

And that made all the difference. If there is one thing I would want someone to take away from her story, it’s this. You are not behind. You just haven’t built your plan yet.

If you’ve been putting this off because you feel like you’re too far behind, let’s change that.
